Frequently Asked Questions
I get asked a lot of question about the kit, so I have put together a list of the most common questions here....
Q. Can I still use my Game Gear cartridges?
A. Unfortunately not. The Zega Mame Gear kit replaces the original game gear PCBs.
Q. Is there much soldering involved?
A. Not if you purchase the pre-assembed kit or a ready-to-play device. There would be no soldering at all.
Q. Can I use my own image?
A. Technically yes, but you would need to install all the required drivers manually for the LCD, GPIO input and audio output yourself. I do not support 3rd party images. If there are any issues while using your own image, I'm afraid I cannot help. Why not do it the easy way and download my pre-configured image or order an SD card with your kit.
Q. Can I still use AA batteries?
A. No, this kit uses 1 or 2 Lithium batteries than can be supplied with the kit, or you can choose to purchase your own.
Q. How long do the batteries last?
A. At the last test I was getting around 5 hours using 2 x 2000mah Lithium batteries on continuous play.
Q. Can shoulder buttons be added?
A. I have added additional solder points to allow you to add additional buttons. So while the kit does not come with shoulder buttons, you are more than welcome to do it yourself.
Q. Can you use a Raspberry Pi 4?
A. No. They are too large and give off too much heat in the confined space.
